Can my spouse work while I study in Canada?
Spousal open work permits for students are now limited to spouses of master's, doctoral and certain professional-program students. Most other students' spouses are no longer eligible.
Only in defined cases. Since IRCC narrowed the rules in January 2025, a spousal open work permit is generally available to the spouse or common-law partner of a student enrolled in a master's degree, a doctoral programme, or a select professional programme, with a minimum programme length applying to some master's programmes. Spouses of most college and undergraduate students are no longer eligible.

- Proof of the marriage or common-law relationship
- The student's programme falling within the eligible levels at the time of application
How it works: step by step
- 1
Confirm the programme level
Eligibility now turns on the study level, not just full-time enrolment.
- 2
Prepare relationship evidence
Marriage certificate or common-law proof is assessed carefully.
- 3
Check independent options
If the spousal route is closed, an employer-specific permit may still be possible.
Expert insight
RCIC strategy consideration: for couples planning study in Canada together, the programme level is now a family decision, not only an academic one. Confirm spousal eligibility before paying tuition deposits.
