Canada PR for Indian professionals in the USA
Indian citizens on H-1B in the United States: how Express Entry treats Indian education, US skilled experience, CRS scoring, spouse factors, French, PNP and intra-company transfers.
Indian citizens working in the United States apply to Canada on the same basis as any other applicant: Canadian programs assess age, education, language ability and skilled work experience, not nationality or US status. Indian degrees and US skilled experience are both usable — the degree normally through an Educational Credential Assessment, the experience through NOC-aligned reference letters. Express Entry is the most common route, with Provincial Nominee Programs, a spouse's factors and French ability as the practical ways to strengthen a mid-range score.
Key facts
| Citizenship | Indian citizenship does not limit or advantage Canadian eligibility |
|---|---|
| Education | Indian degrees are assessed through an ECA from a designated organization |
| Experience | Both Indian and US skilled experience can count as foreign experience |
| Green card queue | A pending US petition has no effect on Canadian eligibility |
| Common occupations | Software development, data, cybersecurity, engineering, finance, healthcare |
| Temporary route | Intra-company transfer where the employer has a Canadian entity |

How it works: step by step
- 1
Establish the correct NOC
US job titles rarely match Canadian NOC titles; the duties decide the code.
- 2
Document both careers
Collect Indian and US reference letters early — older Indian employers are often the slowest to respond.
- 3
Complete the ECA
Have Indian degrees and diplomas assessed; three-year degrees are assessed on their own terms.
- 4
Score and compare
Model the profile with each spouse as principal applicant before submitting.
- 5
Run PNP and French in parallel
Nomination or French-language rounds are the realistic paths for scores below recent general cutoffs.
Expert insight
Indian professionals in the US are often strong on education and experience and weak on nothing except age. That makes language the decisive factor, and it is the one most people under-prepare for. Where a couple is applying together, we routinely score both ways before filing — the difference between principal applicants can be tens of points. And for anyone whose employer already has a Canadian entity, a transfer that builds real Canadian experience is worth costing out alongside the permanent application, not instead of it.
